This British Standard has been developed by practitioners throughout the global community, drawing upon their considerable academic, technical and practical experiences of business continuity management BCM. It has been produced to provide a system based on good practice for business continuity management.

It is intended to serve as a single reference point for identifying the range of controls needed for most situations where business continuity management is practised in industry and commerce, and to be used by large, medium and small organizations in industrial, commercial, public and voluntary sectors. BS is published in will eventually comprise two parts: — Part 1: Code of practice for business continuity management; — Part 2: Specification for business continuity management Part 2 specifies the process for achieving certification that business continuity capability is appropriate to the size and complexity of an organization.

Use of this document As a code of practice, this British Standard takes the form of guidance and recommendations. It should not be quoted as if it were a specification and particular care should be taken to ensure that claims of compliance are not misleading.

Any user claiming compliance with this British Standard is expected to be able to justify any course of action that deviates from its recommendations.
