Preinstructional Planning Objectives The students will choose a color to represent friendship, and identify objects and ideas for that color that they can compare to friendship using similes and metaphors. Before reading the story, I set the students up for listening. I explain to them that they will be choosing a color that they think represents friendship. They are to listen for ideas from the poems in Hailstones and Halibut Bones that they can use in their poem about friendship. They keep the following questions in mind as they listen: What are colors represented by? How could they relate to friendship?

Most kids have a favorite color. A red ball, a black cat, a yellow flower…colors are among the first things a child learns. Each of twelve poems explores a specific color, and a final poem is a general statement about colors.

Most songs, however, may be performed with solo piano accompaniment or with piano, bass, drums, and percussion.
