Preinstructional Planning Objectives The students will choose a color to represent friendship, and identify objects and ideas for that color that they can compare to friendship using similes and metaphors. Before reading the story, I set the students up for listening. I explain to them that they will be choosing a color that they think represents friendship. They are to listen for ideas from the poems in Hailstones and Halibut Bones that they can use in their poem about friendship. They keep the following questions in mind as they listen: What are colors represented by? How could they relate to friendship?

Most kids have a favorite color. A red ball, a black cat, a yellow flower…colors are among the first things a child learns. First published by Doubleday in , Hailstones and Halibut Bones continues to be a popular book in schools around the world. This is a situation where poetry comes alive, the music is very special, and the children have a connection with this music that is really quite remarkable. The songs are for unison and four-part chorus. There are songs for the entire school, for each grade level, and for small groups, with many opportunities for solos.
Middle school and high school students have also performed Hailstones and Halibut Bones. Approximately 50 minutes in length, the overture and thirteen songs are scored for a professional ensemble of twelve jazz and classical musicians playing flute and piccolo, alto and tenor saxophones, trumpet, trombone, viola, classical guitar, electric guitar, harp, piano, string bass and electric bass, drums, and percussion. Most songs, however, may be performed with solo piano accompaniment or with piano, bass, drums, and percussion.
Examples are What Is Red? The use of community resources is an integral part of the song cycle when performed with a live ensemble. Within a school community, Hailstones and Halibut Bones offers the potential for an integrated curriculum. This gives him an important window into self-awareness and understanding.
Her musicals have been produced in theatres and schools across the country; and her concert music, performed in the U.
